For now I’ll try to keep it brief. The CPU is a quad Q8400 which benchmarks the same as an i7 740. That’s fast. The video chip is the lowest truly accelerated NVidia. Not for heavy gamers, but not like integrated graphics either. The RAM is 6 GB. That’s enough for most computing. Surprisingly the 64 bit OS uses memory efficiently, so although 4 GB is too little, 6 is quite good. There are 3 slots in this line. If you plan to do REALLY serious stuff, try to get an 8 GB model because that’s using 2 sticks, so you can add a 4 GB stick later. On the 135 you’ll have to toss the three 2 GB sticks to upgrade to 12 GB. The screen look is divine. The touch is going to be very useful for some, a gimmick for others. The Blue Ray reader is nice. You can get an external writer later pretty cheap, so I wouldn’t bother getting a higher end model just for that. At the present pricing with rebate it’s around thirteen hundred. I was going to get a laptop, but I spend 90% of my time at my desk, so why bother? This is like a big laptop for people that stay put. Or a great second or third entertainment center for rich folks. The speakers are of course nothing like laptop speakers, they bigger – hence they honk. The I/O is good. 5 USB, 1 400 firewire, Bluetooth, Gigabit Ethernet, an SD slot and some sort of SonyMemory slot. The buttons on the side are invisible and unfathomable, but you don’t use them, except by mistake. I wish it were a smidge lighter and had a handle so you could carry it from the office to the den without backpain, but at least it’s got a solid feel. I dunno, I’m a geek, I would never have purchased something like this a few years ago, because of the lack of expandability. But the bright and huge touch screen made the laptops look sad. And to get something with a big screen in a laptop, you pay more for a lot less. But already I’m finding that it’s a bit inflexible 😉 Say it would work for some things in the studio, but you can’t put a PCI audio card in it. Gonggg. I’m not totally convinced, but the screen is so nice, and the whole idea of only having one cable, the power cord, is really a welcome novelty to me. Oh, another thing. The ideal position is on a low table with your chair seat about the same level as the tabletop. Otherwise you’re headed for a neck brace. In the right position it’s comfortable to touch. With speech recognition working pretty well in Win 7 with a quad, and with the touchscreen, it’s quite a different device from a typical desktop. The speech recognition works over bluetooth. And the virtual onscreen keyboard has a handwriting recognition mode. You know, it’s quite “futuristic” when you get used to having all these different modes available. The multi-point touch is nothing like the old single point touchscreens, you can rotate stuff, zoom, etc, like on the iPad. If you can afford a bit of a premium over a dull desktop just to have touch, speech, handwriting, and a pretty stunning 24″ inch display with 1920×1080 resolution, a great viewable angle range, this device will find a good use somewhere in your life. If I could justify it, I’d put one in the bedroom, one in the kitchen, a couple in the studio and the office. No it’s not noisy, but it does have a fan that has to stay on at medium-low rpm, so come to think of it, I probably wouldn’t end up keeping one in the studio. See, it’s a lot like this, it’s not causing bonkers enthusiasm, even though I really like it. Why is that? It’s because it doesn’t fit exactly in any standard role, and whatever you try to fit it in, there’s always a little bit of leg sticking out here, a bit of elbow protruding there. But, dig it, it’s got a lot of good things, so you just have to find the niche it fits in your life. I don’t think I could bear returning it, not after spending almost 4 days solid installing software!

OK after a few weeks, I still like it. I go in cycles of using the touchscreen some, and not at all. I never use it really heavily, though I really like having it. The Firewire port is essential for many camcorders and Audio interfaces, the (only) 5 USB ports call for a little hub, ten bucks. If you do video work, you can plug HDMI from the camcorder in, push a button, and the screen becomes a full 1080 HD display so you can watch/spot clips directly without any delays or effects of processing. There’s also a PIP. When the Firewire is connected you can quickly import the clips, and the USB works great for stills. One detail I had to come back to mention. The position of the switches on the top and right side, and the ports on the left, is completely undetectable from the front, so that I often power down the computer when all I wanted to do was to turn off the display, or I push the screen menu button when I try to eject a CD. This is more than irritating, it is infuriating as it causes problems. My neck hurts from craning over the side to switch modes. Little paper stickers as markers look bad and the parallax makes them ineffective. This is like the Sony notion of elegance on home A/V equipment: dark grey lettering on a black face. Ah, yes, it is so much more Zen to close your eyes when driving at night! And DO remove those ugly labels from your prescription medicine containers.

I ordered this pc from SONY on 12/11/10. It came DOA. I called SONY and the first techman I saw was 1/3/11! Harrived with the WRONG PARTS! On 1/8/11, another techman showed again with the WRONG PARTS! I then called SONY and demanded a refund. The SONY support person told me to generate a RA# return. What he didn’t inform of was that he also could have offred me free return postage. Today a SONY rep refused flat out to refund me the $71.36 while at the same time informing me of the SONY’s omission of offering free return postage! I will never purchase anything again from them.
