Last update was on: Wednesday, August 5, 2020

Product Description

Recessed lights are popular lighting solutions. But Broan took it a step further by incorporating powerful ventilation in the same design. Our recessed fan lights disappear into the ceiling with other recessed lights, so they are practical decorating and air removal solutions for any room in the house.

Amazon.com

Perfect for a bath area to control the humidity, the Broan 744 recessed fan/light is also ideal for use in a utility room, kitchen, or high-traffic family room to keep the air fresh and comfortable. The high efficiency centrifugal fan delivers 70 cubic feet per minute (CFM) of air movement, and it uses a maximum 75-watt incandescent light bulb. It also produces an ultra-quiet, HVI-certified 1.5-sone noise level.

Add a stylish recessed light and ventilation to your bathroom (view larger).

The Broan 744 disappears into the ceiling with other recessed lights, making it a practical decorating solution for any room in the house. The trim also matches the designs of major recessed light manufacturers. It’s listed for use over bathtubs and showers when connected to a GFCI protected branch circuit. The 744 is not for use over cooking surfaces. The light fixture uses either R30 or BR30 bulbs in standard applications, or PAR30L or PAR30LN bulbs when used over bathtubs and showers. Other features include 4-inch ducting for new construction or retrofit and hanger bars for easy installation.

You can control this fan’s operation through a choice of Broan wall control models (available separately):

63W, 63V, 64W, 64V, 68W, 68V, 269WL, 269VL

Considerations When Choosing a Home Ventilation System

Homes are now built much more efficiently than they once were, making them far less costly to heat and air condition. That said, having proper ventilation throughout the home is now imperative in order to provide a safe and comfortable living environment. Broan ventilation fans provide the best solutions to ensure that contaminants are constantly removed from the indoors.

Eliminating excess moisture keeps your home dry and comfortable and can help avoid mold and mildew. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) “outgas” from construction materials such as plywood, carpet, fabric, paint, adhesive, insulation, and other common items. Allergens, dust, cooking vapor, and what the kids bring home from school are more reasons why good ventilation is critical.

Sones measure the “sound level” of your fan

A sone is a measurement of sound in terms of comfortable hearing level for an average listener. The lower the sone value, the more comfortable the environment. Sones are not decibels or volume, but rather how sound is “sensed.” One sone is half as loud as two sones, and is equivalent to a quiet refrigerator.

Calculate the air movement necessary for proper ventilation

Air movement is measured in cubic feet per minute (CFM). To determine CFM requirements, first determine the size of your room. Measure and multiply the length, width and ceiling height of your room to determine cubic footage. Then use the multiplication factor of .13 and round up to the next “ten.” Here are three examples:

Example 1: Bathroom with 8′ ceiling: 7′ wide x 9′ long x 8′ high x .13 = 66. Select a bath fan with at least 70 CFM.

Example 2: Bathroom with 9′ ceiling: 10′ wide x 9′ long x 9′ high x .13 = 105. Select a bath fan with at least 110 CFM.

Example 3: For a bathroom with a vaulted ceiling, use the average ceiling height at the wall and the peak: 8′ wide x 12′ long x ((8′ at wall + 12′ at peak) / 2 = 10′) average height x .13 = 125. Select a fan (or fans) with at least 130 CFM.

Lower electrical costs and add convenience to everyday living by replacing standard switches with occupancy sensors. Leviton’s IPS02 Occupancy Sensor Switch automatically turns the lights ON when you enter a room and OFF when you leave, convenient in rooms where you frequently enter and exit with your hands full. Ideal for use in laundry rooms, basements, storage areas, pantries and garages. Leviton occupancy sensors are a simple, cost effective way to automate a space in your home.

Features and Benefits
  • A simple and effective way to save energy and the associated electric costs. Actual savings from sensors vary greatly depending on usage patterns and occupant habits, but used diligently the energy savings and reduced frequency of bulb replacement over time can provide significant cost savings.
  • Time delay settings of 30 seconds, 5 minutes, 15 minutes or 30 minutes for automatic OFF. For example, closet lighting would ideally be set to turn off in 5 minutes while a bathroom fan may be set to turn off 15 minutes after the space is vacated.
  • Contains a built-in override function, so the device can be activated to operate as a vacancy sensor meaning lights must be manually switched ON but will automatically turn OFF when the room is vacated.
  • Does not require a neutral wire for installation making them perfect for retrofit applications where a neutral wire may not be present. A ground wire is required for operation.

How the Sensor Works

It uses “passive infrared technology” which responds to the infrared heat people naturally emit to monitor a specific area. When this “heat” is sensed, the lights will stay ON in the room. When you leave the room and this “heat” is no longer sensed the lights will automatically turn OFF. Leviton occupancy sensors can also detect when there is ample natural light in a space and will not automatically switch lights ON if not needed.

Installation and Placement Considerations

Leviton Universal Sensors use passive infrared (PIR) technology to detect movement so there are a number of factors that must be considered when installing them:

  • They require a clear view of the room or space for accurate detection—any furniture or obstructions that block the sensor’s view will prevent occupant’s movement from being detected
  • For optimal performance, locate with a clear line-of-view of the area to be covered; perpendicular to the likely movement
  • They are most effective in small, enclosed areas with high levels of occupant motion
  • Size and shape of area needing coverage must be in line with the range of the occupancy sensor
  • The more activity there is in a space, the more sensors will contribute to energy savings and convenience
  • Avoid installing in locations where nearby airflow may falsely register as motion; be mindful of the location of heating units, air conditioners, dryers and other large appliances that generate rapid changes in temperature or movement
